2026 Asian Beach Games: The Future of Beach Sports in the PH

Written By Jairah De Vera | June 7, 2026

THE 2026 Asian Beach Games held in Sanya, China, last April 22 to 30 gathered 1,635 athletes from 45 countries competing in 62 events across 14 sports. From beach volleyball to coastal rowing, the Games highlighted the growth of beach and water-based sports in Asia.

Semifinal Run Fuels 2028 Expectations

For the Philippines, the highlight came from the Gilas Pilipinas 3x3 squads, both men and women, who reached the semifinals against some of Asia’s strongest teams. Players from both squads emerged as key contributors throughout the tournament, reflecting the steady growth of Philippine 3x3 basketball on the international stage. Their campaign not only showcased the skill and resilience of Filipino athletes in emerging formats beyond traditional basketball but also raised expectations for what the country could achieve in the 2028 edition.

The semifinals finish also sparked discussions about the country’s potential in beach sports. Despite being surrounded by coastlines, beach sports in the Philippines continue to receive limited attention compared to mainstream events.

Glory That Sparks Future Greatness

Among the athletes to look forward to the 2028 Asian Beach Games in Cebu is Annie Ramirez, a two-time Asian Beach Games gold medalist who continues to lead the country’s rise in beach sports.

As one of Team Philippines’ flag bearers in the 2026 edition, Ramirez represents the growing strength of Filipino athletes in emerging beach events, inspiring younger competitors as the country prepares to host the regional games for the first time. Her presence inspired younger competitors, proving that Filipino athletes can thrive in formats that demand agility, endurance, and adaptability.

Philippine Beach Sports Rise to Spotlight

The upcoming 2028 Asian Beach Games in Cebu could become a major turning point for Philippine beach sports. Hosting the event will give the country the chance to showcase its athletes, venues, and capability to organize international competitions.

The 2026 Asian Beach Games highlighted the continued growth of beach sports in Asia and showed the Philippines’ potential to compete on the international stage. With Cebu set to host the next edition in 2028, the country now has the opportunity to further develop beach sports and bring more attention to disciplines connected to the country’s coastal landscape.

For Filipino athletes, the semifinal run of Gilas Pilipinas 3x3 squads in Sanya serves as proof that we can compete with Asia’s best when given the platform.

For fans, it is a reminder that the thrill of competition is not confined to hardwood courts or boxing rings but can also be found on sandy beaches and open waters.
