GAMBLING advertisements no longer wait for you to step inside a casino. They now appear on television, billboards, websites, and social media feeds, placing betting promotions within reach of anyone with a phone and an internet connection.
From television commercials and roadside billboards to pop-ups and sponsored posts on social media, gambling promotions have become increasingly visible in everyday life. As online gambling platforms and mobile betting apps become more accessible, their advertisements have also found more ways to reach potential users, raising concerns over how betting is presented as an ordinary form of entertainment.
The Legislative Push
Since 2025, lawmakers have introduced measures seeking to regulate online gambling and limit its accessibility. Among these are Senate President Sherwin “Win” Gatchalian’s proposed restrictions on e-wallet links, cash-in limits, and sponsorships, as well as Senate Bill No. 142 filed by Senator Juan Miguel “Migz” Zubiri, which seeks to ban online gambling and impose penalties including fines and website blocking.
On July 26, Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero filed Senate Bill No. 2347, or the Gambling Advertising Prohibition Act, which seeks to prohibit gambling advertisements across print and digital media. The measure also covers celebrity and influencer promotions and requires gambling operators to display clear warnings on the risks associated with gambling in advertisements that may be permitted under the proposed law.
Escudero cited restrictions on tobacco advertising, celebrity endorsements, and product placements as precedents for limiting exposure to gambling promotions. He also pointed to the Philippine gambling industry’s Php 396.13 billion in gross gaming revenue in fiscal year 2025, underscoring the scale of the industry and the debate over balancing economic gains with consumer protection.
Selling Hope to Everyday Filipinos
Online gambling platforms have tapped into the traditional Filipino concept of “diskarte,” reframing gambling not as a high-risk activity but as a clever and accessible financial strategy. By tailoring this messaging to the average earner, these platforms actively weaponize the concept to lure working-class Filipinos.
Online gambling advertisements often use celebrities, promotional rewards, deposit bonuses, and instant cash-out features to present betting as accessible entertainment. Among the personalities who have appeared in gambling promotions are Vice Ganda for GameZone, Vic “Bossing” Sotto for PlayTime, and Ivana Alawi for Bet88.
These marketing strategies place gambling alongside familiar forms of online entertainment and can frame betting as an accessible way to win money. When paired with the language of diskarte, such promotions raise questions about how financial resourcefulness is being associated with gambling.
Social media algorithms further exploit this vulnerability. Once a user interacts with a single advertisement of gambling content, algorithms instantly track that interest and continuously flood their feed with similar ads. In doing so, it hooks ordinary Filipinos into chasing a fake shortcut out of financial hardships.
The Working-Class Gamble
In this socioeconomic limbo of online gambling advertising, the true cost lies in its deception of ordinary Filipinos. These advertisements sell a dangerous illusion: that an escape from financial hardship is merely a lucky click away, rather than something earned through fair wages, real opportunities, and collective economic support.
For some users, however, gambling can carry financial consequences that extend beyond the initial bet. Losses can affect savings, household expenses, and the ability to meet everyday financial obligations, particularly when betting becomes repeated or difficult to control.
A Threat Beyond the Screen
The accessibility of online gambling also changes how and where people can place bets. Through mobile phones, gambling platforms can be accessed within seconds, allowing users to move from seeing an advertisement to placing a wager without entering a physical gambling venue. Promotions highlighting rewards and quick transactions can further emphasize the convenience of online betting.
That accessibility, however, also raises concerns about the ease with which users can continue betting. With gambling available through the same devices used for everyday transactions and entertainment, the boundary between casual browsing and placing a wager becomes increasingly easy to cross.
Diskarte was never about risking money on a lucky chance. It was about finding a way forward without losing what little remains.
