Salutations to our Second Parents

By Isabel Daenah Y. Manzanero |  October 13, 2023

NATIONAL Teacher's Day is fast approaching; THE BEDAN HERALD interviewed teachers from both urban and rural areas to shed light on their unwavering dedication and boundless passion that serve as the center of the evolving educational landscape in the Philippines. These individuals not only hone the minds, talents, and skills of children but also cultivate their character and individuality —guiding them toward becoming valuable members of society.

The Mentor Who Lights the Way

"The most rewarding part of being a teacher is that you see your students learn the lesson and see them applying the learnings in all the aspects of their lives,” Joan Bernadette C. Bujalance expressed when asked about her favorite part as a teacher.

Within her 41 years of existence, lies 16 years dedicated to honing students from Cristobal S. Conducto Memorial Integrated National High School for a brighter future. Bujalance shared her problems that involve the students' short attention span in listening and learning the lesson, which she often resolves with interactive lessons and activities. Another worry is the difference in today's generation's behavior from hers. But with the continuous effort done, the long process shall be worth it. Despite these struggles, Bujalance continues with her path, thinking it is a calling to be a teacher.

Knocks from the Heart

Jewela C. Fernandez from Bay Central Elementary School in Laguna echoes the same passion and dedication for this field. "I wanted to have a positive, inspiring impact on children's lives," she shared. Her favorite moment occurs the instant she enters the classroom and receives warm greetings from her students at the door. For three decades, she has devoted herself to teaching, and to this day, her passion for education continues to shine brightly.

Fernandez expressed her struggles with the low grades of her pupils and communicating with parents along with the pressure from the people around her. She exemplifies her passion for teaching through the solutions she does, such as conducting home visits to discuss the performance of the children and regulating remedial classes to assist. "It is a part of our job to keep our struggling pupils working so that they can learn and recognize what hard work is all about. Teach with perseverance and time management to help them," Fernandez said.

Mr. All-Rounder

From Los Baños Senior High School, Cris Gacuan's drive to pursue a teaching career stems from his fascination with talking in front of children. The 33-year-old teacher has twelve years of experience with him, enjoying every time he holds a good rapport with the class. He traced back to why he started when he spoke of his love for teaching and learning.

Gacuan also voiced his struggles with needing more staff members, the lack of specialized teachers for a specific discipline, and the low salary. He shared that teachers shoulder more responsibilities that already lie outside their specialty or primary occupation. “Guro ka na nga, minsan nagiging registrar, nurse, guidance counselor ka pa!” He joked lightly. For him, concerns must be dealt with with proper communication and addressing the problem to the higher officials. Gacuan sees this as his way of serving the public and the Filipino Youth.

School and educational experiences profoundly shape students and teachers, serving as the foundation of knowledge and wisdom. It provides a fostering environment where children not only cultivate social connections but also enhance their capabilities. From the break of dawn until night, teachers' dedication and hard work make it possible for students to retain and comprehend information. To end with a word  from Cris Gacuan, “A public school teacher to me must be dedicated, service-oriented, and skilled. Teachers can make or unmake a learner, so one should possess these qualities.”
