Finding the Voice in the Unknown

BEING part of the student publication is a huge responsibility, even more so as an editor. You are not just tasked with writing; you are voicing stories to the whole community. You act as the bridge between the students and the institution, ensuring that all voices, regardless of how few, are valued and loudly heard.

But am I really capable of that?

Becoming the Sports Editor of the student publication was never something I imagined for myself. I was not a sports fan; I was unfamiliar with the rules of the games, the non-mainstream sports, and even the athletes.

So when I was given the role, I was overwhelmed with doubt because how could I contribute to the section I barely knew?

However, one thing I admire about myself the most is my willingness to take risks. I took this role as a challenge to grow and step out of my comfort zone—to truly do what I am passionate about while continuously learning and adapting.

The change I experienced was not sudden—it took me a while to adjust and learn everything from scratch, little by little. I tried to become more involved in the world I once felt unfamiliar with. I watched the teams’ games—not just the mainstream sports but also those with little recognition, listened to the team and personal stories behind the court, and ultimately became the voice of the student-athletes, speaking up for their concerns.

My role was not just to report about their scores or stats, but also to showcase the student-athletes’ dedication and passion for their respective sports and the emotions they conveyed behind every win and loss. It was also about highlighting their unwavering commitment to giving their best and making the Bedan community roar with pride, giving them the recognition they truly deserve.

My two terms as a Sports Editor definitely changed me in a better way. It taught me to lead with empathy and to discover purpose in unexpected ways and places.

Most importantly, I had the opportunity to recognize the student-athletes’ untold achievements and stories, proving that every story counts and that giving everyone a voice may bring the Bedan community closer.

Change can be scary. You might experience self-doubts and countless what-ifs. However, taking a risk does not always mean failure—it also means allowing yourself to grow and explore the world beyond your comfort zone. Venturing into the unknown is sometimes what we need to learn and discover the version of ourselves we never imagined.
