SBCA Volleyball Team Dominates Their First Match in WNCAA

SBCA Women’s Volleyball team clinched a win against Philippine Women’s University (PWU) during their first game in WNCAA last Sept. 22. Both teams captivated people with their intense rallies and plays that showcased their talents. In the end, SBCA won the match by an overall set of 3-1.

The Red Lions’ Strong Start

     During the first set, PWU started strong, leading by two points. However, SBCA quickly caught up after a key substitution. The Red Lions came prepared and focused, launching powerful attacks on PWU. Due to the coordinated attack of SBCA, they took the lead at 5-6 and were extended to 5-9. Despite PWU’s attempt to regain momentum, SBCA maintained its advantage, reaching a match point at 23-25. As a result of the ladies in red’s teamwork, they closed the set with a 25-23 win.

     PWU fought back with tenacity and took an early lead in the second set, reaching a point of 1-6. They were heavily focused on their defense against the powerful attacks of SBCA. However, despite their efforts, the Red Lions rallied back to tie the score at 8-8. After trading points, SBCA gained control, extending their lead with a four-point advantage. As the match progressed, the game got more intense, PWU fought hard to level the score at 23-23, forcing a deuce. However, SBCA pulled ahead to 24-23, only for PWU to respond, securing the set with a narrow 24-26 victory. 

The Surprise Comeback 

     In the third set, PWU started strong, quickly gaining a 9-3 lead. SBCA called a timeout as the Red Lions kept making errors, making PWU continue to dominate the match. However, SBCA regained its composure quickly and slowly clawed its way back, reducing the deficit to 19-14. With a few minutes left, SBCA staged a dramatic comeback, taking the lead at 22-23 and reaching match point at 22-24. PWU closed the gap, but SBCA won the set point of  24-26. The ladies in red had a critical advantage against PWU

     As the match nearly came to an end, the atmosphere of the arena was full of excitement and hope. SBCA maintained its momentum, leaving behind  PWU. Their well-executed plays and strategies made them control the final set from the beginning, establishing a 6-1 lead. Despite PWU's brief rallies, SBCA maintained a solid lead, reaching a point of 13-8, which was extended to a point of 20-14. PWU attempted a comeback, but SBCA called a timeout at 20-16. After a series of rallies with different strategies as well as talents showcased, SBCA won the set by 25-16. 

     THE BEDAN HERALD interviewed Angelica Marie Esquillo (I-BSP) regarding their feelings about winning against PWU and how their coach,  Ryan Jeong Tingco Sucaldito, advised them to lessen their errors. She said, “Huwag kang bibitaw hanggat hindi pa tapos ang laban.” She added that they would still be training their hardest even though they won. As Coach Ryan said, “One game at a time.”  With this victory, the SBCA Women’s Volleyball will be fighting for their next match on Sept. 29 against Miriam College.
