Roblox’s Obby Era: A Cycle of Controversies

Written By Haniel Andrea V. Mizukami | April 29, 2026

VIDEO GAMES have long served as a form of stress reliever for people—whether through immersive role-playing, single-player experiences, or multiplayer titles that bring friends together, platforms like Roblox have expanded this appeal. It offered spaces to users from children to adults to play a wide range of games while connecting with one another. However, this also brought a series of controversies, particularly in the Philippines, where concerns over crimes against children once brought it close to being banned.

Behind the Avatars

Last Mar. 2026, the Philippine Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) proposed the intention to ban Roblox for allegedly being used for sexual predation, grooming, and exploitation of minors, according to the official CICC Facebook page. Information and Communications Technology Secretary Henry Aguda stated in his Facebook post, “Hindi na safe space kung may batang nalalagay sa panganib. Sa direktiba ni Pangulo Ferdinand Marcos Jr., unahin ang proteksyon ng kabataan. Walang platform ang above sa batas pagdating sa child safety.”

With this directive, Roblox was put on formal notice that it could face restrictions or suspension if it did not tighten its child safety systems. Undersecretary Renato “Aboy” Paraiso, CICC’s executive director, gave Roblox Corporation until the end of March to contact the Philippine authorities and discuss preventions to be made to create a safe space for children to play.

He pointed out that not all people who are on the platform are children; some are child groomers and drug dealers. “Ginagamit nila ang platform na ‘yan para makapambiktima. At minsan ‘yan, dyan na nagkakaroon ng transaksyon. When it comes to illegal na kontrabando, yung drugs, ‘yung firearms, andyan na rin,” he added.

Paraiso also noted that there are several countries which banned the platform, such as Qatar, Iraq, and Turkey, for similar reasons— to protect children from sexual exploitation. In the United States, states such as Los Angeles, Texas, and Louisiana have pursued legal action addressing related concerns. Reports indicated that some individuals lure children by promising free ‘Robux,’ the platform’s paid virtual currency, leading to cases worldwide involving abduction, abuse, or online grooming. These unfortunately persist, despite the presence of parental controls within the gaming platform.

Roblox-Schelp Controversy

Roblox also drew backlash and criticism after it banned YouTuber ‘Schelp,’ also known as @RealSchelp, from the platform. Schlep is known for creating Roblox content to expose sexual predators inside the platform. In the same year, he gained traction for his sting operations, which led to six arrests of online groomers.

One might assume someone is actively protecting children from online predators. However, in Aug. 2025, he was banned after the corporation issued a ‘cease and desist’ letter, citing his ‘vigilante’ methods—such as recording interactions and posing as a minor to lure suspects.

In an article by NBC Chicago, the corporation faced more scrutiny after banning Schelp from the platform. Critics argued that instead of investing more resources into creating a safer environment for children, they instead banned the user for ‘violating’ the guidelines of the platform. In the days following the ban, various individuals signed a petition on change.org, seeking Schelp’s reinstatement to the platform and calling for the resignation of the Corporation’s Chief Executive Officer, David Baszucki.

Prioritizing Safety-Systems

Following the planned ban announcement last month, reports indicated that if the corporation failed to address the Philippines’ concerns, a nationwide ban would proceed on Apr. 10. However, days before the scheduled enforcement, the corporation reached out to Philippine authorities, initiating discussions to address the issue.

The CICC stated that during the meeting, they probed into enhancing the identity verification and integrating its system with the Philippines’ national ID database (PhilSys). Paraiso stated that Roblox should also provide a reporting mechanism in case of suspected criminal activities in the online gaming platform, all of which the corporation had agreed to at the end of their meeting last Apr. 7.

While the ban did not continue, the possibility of it happening is still there. “They are not entitled to the protection of our laws. The execution of a ban is bound by their commitment and their implementation of their commitments,” Paraiso said, stating that the corporation should commit to protecting the welfare of the children on the platform.

According to Roblox Corp.’s Vice President for Global Public Policy Nicky Jackson Colaco, the corporation has begun its “global overhaul of safety systems,” which includes creating two new modes: “Kids” mode for ages 5-8, disabling chatbots for the safety of children; and “Select” mode for those aged 9-15, their access will be limited to games with content maturity labels up to and including moderate.

During the height of the proposed ban in the Philippines, many have argued that restricting the game would offer little to no benefit to the country. However, evidence of sexual exploitation has been reported, and authorities maintain the right to investigate the platform’s safety systems. As of press time, discussions of a potential ban remain ongoing in the Senate if the corporation does not commit to its words for protection.
