SAN Beda College Alabang's athletes proudly represented the school at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) South opening ceremony held at Carmelo Q. Quizon Gymnasium in the University of Batangas (UB), the host institution for Season 24, last Feb. 24. Carrying the pride of their respective schools, athletes from 11 participating teams boldly entered the venue with the season's theme "We rise, stride, and play as one" in mind.
Dr. Hernando Perez, the President of the University of Batangas, shared his excitement as the host school for this year’s NCAA South. He extended his gratitude to the invited guest speakers, Sisi Rondina and LA Tenorio for coming over, and welcomed all the coaches and representatives of the schools.
The UB executive members then presented certificates of recognition and tokens of appreciation to all the schools that were present at the event. Moreover, the selected UB students of the dance troupe, pep squad, and bench cheering made an unforgettable performance that surely ignited the stage and left the audience in awe.
Cherry Ann “Sisi” Rondina, a beach volleyball player of Creamline Cool Smashers, was the first guest speaker. In her speech, she shared all the hardships she experienced in life growing up, how much she struggled when she first started taking her career path as a volleyball player and her unexpected rise in the industry. Rondina shared, “Ang hirap kasi maraming toxic na tao na pwede kang pababain, siraan, lahat.” Amidst all that, she took those cruel words as a motivation to strive harder and continue the things she loves, which led to where she is today.
Lewis Alfred "LA" Vasquez Tenorio, the Point Guard of Barangay Ginebra San Miguel, took the stage as a proud Batangueño and the last inspirational speaker of the event. He recounted his humble beginnings as a student-athlete representing his school, and how those experiences paved the way for the numerous achievements he has attained today. Tenorio reminded the athletes to “make the most out of it” and shared his 4 mantras that athletes must always remember: determination, discipline, teamwork, and be humble.
As the event approached its end, Marquis Daniel Macatangay, a UB Grade 12 student, led the athletes to the oath of sportsmanship. Followed by the virtual lighting of the torch by Duff Rynwell Guitierrez, the team captain of UB Men’s Volleyball, and all the team captains of each participating school. Atty. Jesus Mayo, UB Chairman of the Board of Regents, concluded the event by officially announcing the commencement of NCAA South Season 24.
With the anticipation building for the upcoming games of the NCAA South Season 24, the Bedan athletes are poised to showcase their exceptional skills and unwavering dedication as they strive to rise, stride, and play as one.
