“TO be a center of performing arts…,” said Dr. Andres Ignacio San Mateo Jr., Vice President for Academic Affairs, during the joint-oath-taking ceremony of Himig Bedista and Teatro Bedista, the Tertiary Schools’ music and theatre organizations last Aug. 9 at Fr. Rosendo Herrera Hall.
The event marked a new chapter for both organizations of creativity and promising artistry and celebrated Teatro Bedista’s 10th anniversary, known as ‘Season X.’
In her opening remarks, Prof. Cheribin G. Cruz, moderator of both organizations, said, “Himig Bedista and Teatro Bedista, though different in their mediums, share a common purpose: to elevate the human spirit, provoke thought, and foster a deep appreciation for the arts.” She reminded the members they were committing to a club and a larger mission.
Prof. Roma Wynn C. Sedo, Dean for Student Affairs, expressed her enthusiasm and support for the two clubs. She expressed, “I would like to convey my support to all of you, and I look forward to more meaningful and exciting events for this academic year.”
Reflecting on Rev. Fr. Gerardo Ma. De Villa, OSB, SBCA Rector President’s vision, Dr. San Mateo, enthusiastically affirmed the institution’s commitment to becoming a center for the performing arts. “Ang Tertiary School ay may sagot sa kaniyang panawagan na ang San Beda College Alabang (SBCA) ay maging sentro ng Performing Arts,” he remarked.
He then added that this commitment would be realized through the stage plays, performances, and concerts by the clubs. He also voiced strong support for the initiatives of Krystel Cayton (III-BAP), Himig Bedista President, and Fritzen Aldaba (IV-BAP), Teatro Bedista President, hoping their contributions will leave a lasting legacy at SBCA by the end of the year.
Prof. Cruz officiated the Oath of Membership and the Oath of Office, formally inducting the new members and officers into their respective positions.
The event continued with the president’s address, which Cayton and Aldaba delivered. “Mahirap ang change, pero mas mahirap ang maging stagnant,” Cayton remarked, reflecting on her initial underestimation of her role's responsibilities.
She recognized the challenges of leadership and emphasized that extracurricular responsibilities should not be taken lightly. Cayton admitted that, with no prior leadership experience, she is still learning how to be an effective student leader.
As for Aldaba, he addressed the organization's challenges, particularly its struggle to progress as a performing arts organization due to the declining caliber of its productions, which led to a decrease in membership.
“Tulungan natin ang isa’t isa at ang ating mahal na organisasyon para sa mabisang pagpapagaling at pag-angat ulit nito,” he stated. He concluded by encouraging everyone to support the organization’s revival and to be part of its new chapter in theater.
