MARKING more than five decades of women’s sports, the Women’s National Collegiate Athletic Association (WNCAA) opened its 56th season last Sept. 6, with 16 schools gathered at the Makati Coliseum. The introduction of athletes came with a parade and a dance number for each school.
Beyond the athletes, the league also recognized the dedication of its leaders and community for this season.
Makati Sangguniang Kabataan representative, Hon. Tristan Pangilinan delivered a welcome address, emphasizing the value of sports in developing not only through physical skills but also enhances the cognitive and personal skills that they might use in the future.
On behalf of Mayor Nancy Binay, Hon. Pangilinan shared that success is not seen through a scoreboard but the lessons that they learn like respect, unity and perseverance. “The WNCAA has always been more than just a sports league, it's a community that empowers young women to dream big to strive for excellence and to build character through discipline, teamwork, and sportsmanship” and hoped that as the season opens may the athletes carry unity and fair play.
This season’s theme, “Breaking Barrier, Building Legacies,” was addressed by Director of Student Affairs of Assumption College, Ms. Bernadette Abrilla. She expressed that the theme was a collaborative discernment of Assumption College’s varsity team captains as it reflects the spirit of women in sports and their united voices which shape this vision.
In this season’s logo, the emblem’s torch represents the courage to shatter barriers of gender inequality in sports and shape youth to the generations of women who persevere against challenges, while its colors red, blue, yellow, and white stand for Filipino pride.
College President of Assumption San Lorenzo, Sister Irene Torres, highlighted the Mission of the WNCAA noting that the call of women in sports go beyond games. “Breaking barriers is not only personal success, it is about widening the path so that others may walk through,” she said.
Guest speaker Atty. Maria Caterina Lopa inspired athletes with her three messages: enjoy being part of the team, dream big, and remember that the discipline and respect they have today will shape the kind of adults they are in the future. “Think about the kind of players you’re today because the kind of players you are now are gonna be the kind of adults in the future,” Lopa expressed.
Last season’s victorious schools were also recognized:
For the Midget’s Division: Assumption College San Lorenzo and De La Salle (DLS) Santiago Zobel (first runners-up), and Assumption Antipolo (champion).
For the Junior’s Division: Assumption College of San Lorenzo (second runner-up), St. Paul College Pasig (first runner-up), and DLS Santiago Zobel (champion).
