"FOR this year, the most important thing for the engineering department and the Junior Bedan Engineering Society (JBES) is exposure," says Karl Ng (II-BSECE), the first president of SBCA's first co-curricular organization from the Engineering Department. JBES comprises students with a Bachelor of Science in Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, and Industrial Engineering.
In an interview with THE BEDAN HERALD, Ng mentions that the engineering department students took the initiative to establish their own organization and break away from the Bedan Information Technology Society (BITS).
With the continual growth of their population, this academic year comes the need to establish a community they would instantly belong to. After the first week of the first semester, they started building their constitution, polishing their by-laws, and processing the paperwork, and by Oct. 16, JBES became official.
The officers were selected after careful deliberations by their professors headed by their moderator and the department chair of Computer Engineering, Dr. Aristotle Musni; he intended to make the pioneer batch the executives. While Engr. Jerry Turingan, the Dean of the School of Engineering and Technology, suggested including committee heads to streamline their projects.
As the pioneer batch and the first president of the first organization of the engineering department, Ng's ultimate goal is "to make San Beda known for Engineering."
Events outside SBCA are also marked in their calendar of activities. This November, Computer Engineering students will spectate the Student's Summit competition at Asia Pacific College, which has the theme "Innovating with Purpose: Engineering Solutions, Empowering Resilience."
Ng understands the academic challenges brought by their program and intends to build the students’ resilience through lighthearted events. “I want to help everyone, especially 'yung freshmen, to have more resilience kasi ayun talaga 'yung core ng engineering, to have resilience," he said.
JBES intends to have its first General Assembly this February with the theme, "A Welcome and New Beginning to Aspiring Engineers and Society." This event shall formally introduce their organization to SBCA, celebrate their achievements, and announce future projects.
Another event they proposed that is still a work in progress is their sports event in collaboration with BITS. Their e-sports competition this coming Pista ng Sto. Niño celebration in January is also something to look forward to. The core of these events is to strengthen relations and bring people together.
Ng desires for the organization and its students to continue collaborations and simultaneously, learn new technologies and innovation with people from the same field within and outside of SBCA.
