LAST Sept. 7, the first match of the 56th Season of the Women’s National Collegiate Athletic Association (WNCAA) Volleyball Tournament featured the SBCA Women’s Volleyball Team against the Philippine Women’s University (PWU) Women’s Volleyball Team at St. Scholastica’s College Gymnasium. Even though there were some strong defensive plays and coordinated attacks from both teams, SBCA fell 0-3.
In the first set, PWU started strong, ahead with the opening four points. SBCA responded with seven straight, showcasing their improved defense. The teams traded points in a tight battle, but PWU ultimately took the set 25-20.
The second set saw SBCA start on serve, but early errors allowed PWU to pull ahead. SBCA managed to score through rallies and service aces, yet PWU’s strong spikes and steady attacks widened the gap, finishing the set 25-13.
The third and final set began with PWU leading 4–0 before SBCA rallied to tie it 6–6. Both teams traded points in an intense battle, but after a series of errors and defensive stops, SBCA struggled to keep pace. PWU sealed the set 25–21, completing a 3–0 sweep over SBCA.
During an interview with THE BEDAN HERALD, Ashley Oliveros (II-BAIS) who plays as middle blocker, shared that she felt nervous and excited prior to the game because they knew they would struggle during the match. “Although, we are all trying our best, it's just that we are all having our lapses but we will try our best to win our games.” she expressed.
Both highlighted that this year’s SBCA Women’s Volleyball Team is a mix of college and five senior high school players, which posed challenges but also fostered bonding during their summer training.
When asked about their message to future opponents, Oliveros said, “We are very excited to see you guys again since last year. And also, you will see another team of Beda—this will be a newer team of Beda.” While Coach Ryan seeks to surprise their following opponents with what they have prepared.
