COMING back stronger this National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) South Season 25, the SBCA Women’s Futsal team successfully clinched the Second Runner-Up title during the futsal’s one-day league last June 29 at the home of the Red Lions.
Red Lions’ Strong Start
In their first match of the season, the Red Lions dominated the court with their aggressive plays and excellent teamwork against Emilio Aguinaldo College-Cavite (EACC). The match ended 6-0, and SBCA took their first win in the rankings.
In an interview with THE BEDAN HERALD, Gleyzl Rose Sara (IV-BSBA-MM), mentioned that their first game with EAC was reasonably challenging as they did not train much together. When asked how they overcame the hurdle, she responded, “Well, most of us nag p-play sa ibang [football/futsal] clubs so I think, mag ga-gather kami once a week or twice a week and I think yung communication is important kaya nagkakaroon parin kami ng magandang play, yung outcome ngayon.”
The Semi-Final Battle
The Red Lions advanced to the semi-finals against the University of Perpetual Help System Laguna (UPHSL) for the best-of-three shootout. Three players from each team, including their respective goalkeepers, participated in the shootout where the opposing team’s goalkeeper defended while one player attempted to shoot the ball into the goal. With a score of 1-3, the UPHSL scored three consecutive goals, leading to their victory against SBCA.
During the semi-final game against UPHSL, the Red Lions’ goalkeeper also needed medical attention after injuring herself. However, she continued playing for the team despite the presence of a Medic team during the game.
Jaide Ligad (III-BSA) expressed how the injuries of her teammates affected her. She said, “Medyo pressure siya since madaming na-injure sa team ko.” Ligad also added how the Athletics Department lacked support since there was no medic present during the game, “Wala man lang tayong medics na maayos.”
Victory after Setbacks
After the defeat against UPHSL, the Red Lions faced the University of Batangas (UB) for the Battle for Third game, the team’s final match. With teamwork and determination, SBCA won with a score of 2-0 and secured the second runner-up title for the season.
