SBCA Engineering Programs Gain CHED Recognition

ATTAINING a significant milestone, the SBCA’s School of Engineering and Technology (SET) has reached a pivotal achievement, as three of its engineering programs — Bachelor of Science in Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, and Industrial Engineering — were officially granted government recognition by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), already in effect in for this academic year.

The recognition affirms that the said programs meet the standards set by CHED, ensuring that SBCA continues to deliver quality engineering education. Three years after the engineering programs were approved in 2023, SBCA completed CHED’s standard process— which includes obtaining a two-year initial permit followed by a one-year extension—before being granted government recognition after meeting the minimum requirements.

In an interview with THE BEDAN HERALD, Engr. Jerry V. Turingan, MSc, Dean of SET, shared that the significant accomplishment of attaining government recognition from CHED highlights the quality and strength of the engineering programs offered by SBCA.

He further stated that the recognition enables the engineering graduates to secure employment in both the private and public sectors. It also qualifies engineering graduates to take the Professional Regulation Commission licensure exams and pursue certifications from accredited professional organizations, as it elevates their education to the level of CHED-recognized higher education institutions, serving not just as a credential but as a gateway to professional success.

“San Beda College Alabang's dedication to excellence is amply demonstrated by this government recognition. It also emphasizes how its engineering programs have undergone a substantial transformation, enabling a culture of dynamic, outcomes-based learning environment,” he shared.

Engr. Turingan highlighted the institution’s investments in cutting-edge laboratory tools and equipment, industry-relevant curricula, and robust faculty development and research initiatives as key to the milestone. He added that all aspects of the engineering programs, from industry partnerships to library resources, have been strengthened to meet CHED standards, aligning them with the Philippine Qualifications Framework. This national system sets qualification levels and standards for learning outcomes based on knowledge, skills, and values gained by the learners and workers through various methods.

“This government recognition marks a turning point in the academic journey of our students, affirming that their education will continue to expand in both breadth and quality. This milestone also comes with the assurance that their efforts are supported by the highest academic standards set by the government, paving a path toward a successful professional career in engineering,” the Dean said.

Engr. Turingan reaffirmed the department’s commitment to continuous improvement following the government recognition from CHED. Moving forward, the school aims to pursue higher levels of accreditation and align its programs with global standards such as the Washington Accord—a global agreement among organizations that accredit tertiary-level engineering degree programs.

With ongoing investments in advanced laboratories and industry-standard technologies, SET seeks to further enrich student learning and research. Anchored in these efforts, SBCA continues to position itself as a center for excellence, dedicated to developing ethical, innovative, and globally competitive engineering and technology graduates.
