Playing with Perception: The Science Behind Gaming

Every day, millions of people pick up a controller to compete, create, and connect. Yet whenever violence makes headlines, video games are often placed on trial in the court of public opinion. The question remains: do virtual worlds truly shape real-world behavior, or is the answer far more complex?

Whenever a violent incident makes headlines, video games often become one of the first things blamed. But as scientists examine decades of research, the relationship between gaming and human behavior appears far more complicated than a simple cause-and-effect story.

When Science Looks at Gaming

An internal text-mining metadata project conducted by Inquirer Metrics data scientist Dr. Alicor Panao, an associate professor at the University of the Philippines Diliman and a data scientist at Inquirer, examined thousands of Scopus-indexed studies exploring the link between gaming and aggression.

Rather than focusing on a single experiment, bibliometric analysis identifies patterns across thousands of published studies. This allows researchers to determine recurring findings, areas of agreement, and gaps that require further investigation. In a debate often shaped by personal experiences and public opinion, this broader approach provides a more comprehensive picture than any single study alone.

Panao’s analysis examined various gaming experiences, including action and combat games, social and cooperative games, immersive virtual reality games, and simulation, strategy, and sandbox games. Rather than focusing solely on violent titles, the research considered gaming as a broader digital experience.

The findings challenge the assumption that video games alone can explain aggression. According to Panao, 68.16 percent of studies on action and combat games found no evidence linking gaming to aggressive behavior. Meanwhile, 18.51 percent reported a direct association, while 13.33 percent attributed aggression to other factors that may better explain aggressive behavior; among them are age, existing mental health conditions, family conflict, bullying, social rejection, and socioeconomic stress.

The pattern held across other genres. Among studies involving social and cooperative games, 70.57 percent found no link between gaming and aggression. Similarly, 73.47 percent of studies on immersive and virtual reality reported no evidence of a link. The strongest agreement appeared in simulation, strategy, and sandbox games, with 80.41 percent indicating no meaningful correlation, compared with 12.65 percent reporting a direct association.

The consistency across genres is what makes the results significant. Rather than explaining aggression through gaming alone, the research points toward a more complicated reality—one in which gaming exists alongside many other influences that shape human behavior.

Aggression Is Not the Same as Violence

One of the greatest challenges in gaming research is distinguishing correlation from causation. Just because two things occur together does not mean one causes the other. Millions of people play video games, yet only a small fraction commit violent acts. If gaming were a primary cause of violence, decades of research would likely show stronger and more consistent evidence. Instead, findings remain mixed and point to numerous contributing factors.

Some studies have found that violent video games may be associated with short-term increases in physiological arousal, aggressive thoughts, and aggressive feelings in controlled settings. A 2001 meta-analysis by Craig A. Anderson and Brad J. Bushman, published in Psychological Science, reported these effects based on experimental and nonexperimental studies involving children and young adults. More recently, however, research has emphasized that the relationship is more complex. A 2023 study by Szymon Zbigniew Olejarnik and Daniela Romano, published in Frontiers in Psychology, examined the relationship between violent video game exposure, aggression, narcissism, and self-esteem, finding that individual personality traits should also be considered when interpreting aggressive behavior.

In its July 6 statement on school violence, the Psychological Association of the Philippines (PAP) stressed that serious acts of violence cannot be attributed to a single cause. Instead, violence results from the interaction of developmental, relational, social, community, digital, cultural, and societal influences.

Mental health struggles, trauma, family relationships, bullying, peer influence, and access to support systems can all affect how individuals respond to challenges and conflict.

The question researchers are increasingly exploring, then, is not simply whether games influence people, but how digital experiences interact with the many other parts of a person’s life.

The Digital Spaces Players Create

The role of video games has evolved alongside technology. Modern games are no longer just isolated forms of entertainment; they have become digital environments where people communicate, collaborate, compete, and create.

A multiplayer game can become a place where players develop teamwork skills and build connections with others. Online gaming communities allow people to interact across different locations and backgrounds, demonstrating how games can function as social environments alongside their role as entertainment platforms.

At the same time, gaming spaces face challenges similar to those of other online communities and can be misused by online extremist groups. Following the 2026 Tacloban school shooting, Philippine investigators looked into allegations that the online extremist network “764” may have used gaming platforms to reach vulnerable minors.  A similar debate surfaced after the 2025 school shooting in Graz, Austria, where the perpetrator's interest in first-person shooter games drew public attention. However, investigators emphasized that gaming alone could not account for the attack and that multiple factors were being examined. In these situations, experts emphasize that the concern lies in the misuse of digital spaces rather than in the existence of games themselves.

This reflects a broader challenge in technology: as digital environments become more connected, understanding how people behave within them becomes just as important as understanding the technology itself. Questions about online safety, digital literacy, and responsible platform design have become part of the larger conversation surrounding gaming.

Rethinking the Player Behind the Screen

As research continues to develop, it is also reshaping how society understands gamers. The image of the isolated player does not fully capture the reality of a global community made up of students, professionals, parents, educators, and athletes: people who engage with games for reasons ranging from competition and creativity to storytelling and social connection.

The growing field of gaming research reflects a larger shift in how scientists approach technology. Instead of viewing digital experiences as simply harmful or beneficial, researchers are examining the interplay between people, platforms, and the environments they create.

The question surrounding video games is no longer only about what happens inside a game. It is also about what happens around it: the communities people form, the experiences they bring with them, and the ways technology becomes part of everyday life. As gaming evolves, understanding its impact means looking past assumptions and toward the dynamic between people, technology, and the digital worlds they create.
