The Fall of the Red Lions against the Scorpions

By Johann Elijah Dalit | May 1, 2025

LAST Apr. 27, the SBCA Red Lions suffered a defeat against the Centro Escolar University (CEU) Scorpions, ending with a score of 57-70 during the MNCAA Season 20 Men’s Basketball Tournament held at the University of Asia and the Pacific (UA&P).

Strong Start, Struggles in the Finish

The game began with a close contest, as the Red Lions kept pace with the Scorpions in the first quarter, which ended 14-16 in favor of the Scorpions. SBCA used two early timeouts to adjust their player rotation and match the pace of CEU’s aggressive plays. Despite these adjustments, the Red Lions found it difficult to penetrate the Scorpions’ tough defensive plays.

In the second quarter, the Red Lions started to find better offensive play and improved their defensive efforts. However, CEU maintained the lead, closing the half at 23-27. The coaching staff adjusted at halftime to adapt their play calling and rotations.

Late Game Breakdown

By the third quarter, CEU started to pull ahead, capitalizing on defensive gaps and backdoor cuts, ending the frame at 40-50. The Red Lions remained pumped up through consistent shooting and timely passes, staying within range of a comeback.

However, in the final five minutes of the fourth quarter, the Scorpions took control, forcing several turnovers and converting on fastbreaks. Despite the Red Lions’ earlier efforts, the game slipped away, ending in a 57-70 loss.

In an interview with THE BEDAN HERALD, Kyle Justin Sabal (II-BSBA MM) mentioned that despite losing, they still tried their best to get close and stay in the game. Sabal said, “The whole MNCAA tournament was a new experience for us and we’ve learned new lessons along the way.”

The Red Lions will face the Scorpions again in their upcoming semifinal match on Sunday, May 3, hoping to bounce back and keep their title alive.
