THE Philippines has once again shone on the international stage thanks to the exceptional talent of Mhico Aish Cortel, a senior high school student from Tunasan National High School in Muntinlupa City. He recently captured the championship title in the Individual Solo Color Guard Senior Class (Male category) at the esteemed Asian Music Games (AMG). This competition, proudly presented by the Asian Marching Band Confederation (AMBC), is Asia's biggest virtual music and visual competition, showcasing the most outstanding individual, duet, and group performances across the continent.

Cortel's remarkable achievement is a testament to his unwavering dedication, passion, and perseverance. His musical journey commenced in 2016 when he joined his school's band, initially exploring the lyre and xylophone. Over time, his love for music and performance deepened, eventually leading him to master the trombone. Notably, the trying times of the COVID-19 pandemic played a pivotal role in shaping his artistic development.

In an article by the Manila Bulletin, Cortel shared that "I began to take an interest in color guard during the pandemic. A friend of mine, already a skilled color guard member, taught me the art. It was a way for us to stay active and engaged when we couldn't leave our homes due to the lockdown. The color guard became a creative outlet and a source of motivation during those difficult times."
