BEAMING with Filipino pride, Alexandra Eala stuns the international stage with her achievements during the Miami Open Tennis Tournament 2025. She reached the semi-finals after her victory against the Grand Slam champion No. 2 Iga Swiatek in their quarter-final match with a 6-2, 7-5 score last Mar. 27, marking her the first Filipina to reach the Women’s Singles semi-finals.
Momentum Shifts
Before Eala’s advancement to the semi-finals, she faced off against well-known players. Eala played the round of 64 against Jelena Ostpenko, the No. 25 and 2017 French Open champion. After a closely contested match, the Filipina tennis player won with the scores of 7-6, 7-5.
Shortly after winning against Ostapenko and before her quarter-final match against Swiatek, Eala reached the round of 32 last Mar. 24 against Madison Keys—the No. 5 and Australian Open champion. Eala claimed another victory, scoring 6-4, 6-2 against Keys.
Eala’s victories against the top 25 and top 5 players marked milestones in her career, leading to her advancement toward the semi-finals against Pegula after Swiatek.
Beginnings of Endings
After a three-set match with world No. 4 Jessica Pegula last Mar. 28, finishing with a tally of 7-6 (3), 5-7, 6-3, Alex Eala’s dream run at the Miami Open ended. Throughout the tournament, Eala’s impressive run included upsets over three Grand Slam champions, Iga Swiatek, Madison Keys, and Jelena Ostapenko, all in one tournament run.
With her new ranking of world No. 73, Eala is up from her previous spot of No. 75 in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) standings. Her ranking gives credence to a positive shift in her career, as she entered the Miami Open ranked 140th.
Without a doubt, Alex Eala has made a lasting impression across the globe with her remarkable display of skill and talent. Her performance at the Miami Open is just the beginning of her future dream runs that are to remember.
