CineBedista 2023: Gabi ng Parangal

ORGANIZED by Beda.Comm, the co-curricular organization of the Communications and Media Studies (CMS) Department, the CineBedista awards night or the 'Gabi ng Parangal' happened at the Manny Reyes hall last Mar. 23. The event was hosted by Kaile De Lima (III-BACMS) and Ilyanna Marcelo (III-BACMS).

With the theme, ‘Salaysay, Kalayaan, at Sining,’ Beda.Comm marks their first filmmaking competition open to the general public, outside of San Beda College Alabang (SBCA). Arjanmar Rebeta, a film ambassador of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), Mark Felix Ebreo, an award-winning filmmaker championing queer narratives, and Angela Suarez, the creatives and production head of 8th Street Cinema, were the judges for the film competition.

The Gabi ng Parangal recognized the Top 12 for the Sibol category namely “Searching for Aliens and other Unidentified Feelings” by De La Salle - College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB), “Tupi” by Bulacan State University (BSU), “Alon” by Mapua Malayan Colleges of Laguna (MMCL), “Glitters” by Mapua University - Makati Campus, “Simpleng Pagtinding” by Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation (MSEUF), “Panaghoy” by Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP), “Shadows” by Palm Tree Productions, “Sunod na Hakbang” by BSU TNEU ARASOF Nasugbu, “Puppet Show” by College of Saint Anthony (CSA), “Naupos na Kandila” by Eugenio M. Lopez Jr. Center for Media Arts Senior High School, “Narrated” by PUP, and “Likod ng Lente” by The Cardinal Academy Inc. 

There was also the Top 7 for the Hiraya category namely “Pusoy Dos” by iAcademy Makati, “Ang Pagharana ni Alon kay Tadhana” by De La Salle University - Manila (DLSU), “Mary Go Round, Mary Go Round” by DLS-CSB, “GRWM” by SBCA, “Bata, Bata Ka Lang” by DLS-CSB, “Pananaw” by MSEUF,  and “Through the Viewfinder” by DLS-CSB.

The night ended with the announcement of the grand winners for each category: “Glitters,” directed by Jan Darryl Villafuerte from Mapua University - Makati Campus won the championship title for the Sibol category; “Naupos na Kandila” directed by Carlos Aragon for second place and “Searching for Aliens and Other Unidentified Feelings” by Vahn Pascual for  3rd place. For the Hiraya category, “Mary Go Round, Mary Go Round” directed by Vahn Pascual from DLS-CSB won the championship title, “Bata, Bata Ka Lang” directed by Karl Marquez from DLS-CSB won second place, and “GRWM” directed by Krysta Herran from SBCA won 3rd place.

“To all aspiring filmmakers out there, gawin niyo lang kung anong gusto niyo. Gawin niyo lang kung anong nilalaman ng puso niyo. Huwag niyo isipin yung mga equipment, mas isipin niyo yung content o yung mga nais niyong ibahagi sa mga tao.” said Carlos Aragon, the director of “Naupos na Kandila.” Aragon was grateful that his film was recognized and received multiple awards. The film won second place for best film under the Sibol category and also the best in cinematography award.
