THE 25th of October marks the celebration of art by recognizing and valuing the aesthetic and creative qualities of visual, auditory, or literary artworks. Art Appreciation Day is a time for people to acknowledge the historic, modern, and even mundane art pieces in their surroundings. This day encourages a more profound connection with art and can lead to greater enjoyment and insight into the world of artistic expression.
Artistry Unveiled
For this year's Art Appreciation Day, THE BEDAN HERALD interviewed a Bedan artist to share her thoughts and love for art. “Art can be anything you want it to be,” Sophia Adame (III-BSBA MM) said. Adame has been painting for three years but has been interested in art ever since she was a child. In 2021, she started accepting commissions and established her small business in painting. As she passionately spoke about her art, Adame mentioned that her favorite subject is ‘Koi Fish’ which possess the remarkable ability to swim against strong currents. Koi fish not only symbolizes luck in some cultures, it also symbolizes strength and perseverance in her eyes.
On this significant day, people can hopefully see the power of images to captivate the senses, stir the imagination, and connect them to the story painted on the canvas. The power of expression through painting is a testament to the boundless creativity of humans. Take a step back and see that anything and anyone can be a piece of art.
Paintings as Emotional Catalysts
Paintings are powerful visual narratives that evoke profound emotions and foster a deep connection between the artist and the viewer. Adame recounted the words of her most memorable client who built a house and filled their home with her paintings. Her client expressed how they love the symbolism and the energy her paintings bring into her home as they radiate positivity and lightness every time they look at them. According to Adame, hearing positive comments helps a lot — it makes her realize people appreciate what she does and how they take the time to understand the meaning behind each one.
Shaping Perspectives and Emotions
Through art stories like Adame's, we understand that art can take many forms and hold different meanings for each individual. Whether it's a stunning painting, a captivating piece of music, or a thought-provoking piece of literature, art can connect people. We can possess a deep understanding of artistic techniques or appreciate the craft for what it is.
Art's place in society exposes individuals to diverse viewpoints and insights from those who produce it. It encourages viewers to contemplate new ideas, prompts critical thinking, and stirs emotions in both creators and observers. Having a deep philosophical understanding of every art a human lays their eyes on is not needed to be able to appreciate art. Simply looking at it and thinking it is art is already a form of art appreciation.
