Bedans Face Midterms after Early Semester Challenges

WITH the first months of school behind and midterm exams fast approaching, Bedan students from different year levels reflect on their early experiences and share how they are preparing for the challenges ahead.

For first-year Christian Laigo (I-BSIE), stepping into San Beda for the first time is both thrilling and challenging. “I’m still adjusting to my new schedule and connecting with my professors and classmates,” he shared.

Despite the early struggle, Laigo is eager to join activities and organizations that align with his interests. “It’s a fresh start for me—to set new goals, improve my skills, and grow out of my comfort zone,” he added.

Now that midterms are near, Laigo is sharpening his study routine, starting with easier subjects and putting more focus on the difficult ones, especially math for engineers.

Shifting from the Legal Management program to Psychology, Sebastian Cabral (II-BAP) sees the start of the school year as a chance to explore more of himself while enjoying the journey. “It's a new environment with kind and friendly faces,” he said.

Looking ahead to midterms, he shared, “I guess I am somewhat ready. I’m nervous, but I remind myself that it’s nothing to worry about.”

As for Vince Vestal (III-BSA), the first week was nothing short of intense. “The first week is literally hell week,” he jokingly admitted. This year, he aims to improve his study habits to prepare for higher-level accounting subjects. Vestal is also looking forward to Integration 2025 and cheering on peers in various segments.

When asked about midterm preparation, Vestal follows a structured routine—studying 4 to 8 hours daily, organizing tasks, and focusing on one subject at a time to avoid burnout. “Burnout can’t really be avoided, but we have to deal with it,” he said, stating the importance of improving one’s mental health and giving oneself a rest.

“My first few weeks have been very stressful,” Justine Santiago (IV-BSLM) shared as he entered the year with mixed emotions, citing the pressure of thesis writing and challenging law subjects.

He noted that midterm preparation has been ongoing since day one, with the Socratic method pushing students to study and review daily as if every class were an exam. Despite the pressure, Santiago is determined to make his senior year memorable, “to study harder, take part in school activities, laugh harder, and savor my cafeteria favorites,” he shared.

The students also highlighted the changing atmosphere on campus. Laigo noted how the environment feels “welcoming and vibrant,” while Cabral observed a positive change he “just can’t put a finger on.” Vestal shared the excitement of meeting new first-year students in his program, and Santiago emphasized the energy of the community, especially with the upcoming events: Integration and Pista ng Sto. Niño.

Time management and balance stood out as the main focus for these students. Whether it be from mastering the timing of their commute to secure a parking spot on campus or prioritizing their mental health after last semester’s burnout, these Bedans are still eager to maximize growth and create lasting memories.

They advise students to face changes with confidence, emphasizing that while the start may be difficult, the results are often rewarding. And when in doubt, Whoopee iced coffee has become a dependable caffeine source, providing the needed energy through several more hours of academic work.

With optimism, grit, and a strong sense of community, Bedans from all levels are ready to face their midterm examinations happening from Sept. 22 to 27, and continue their journey of challenges, learning, and personal growth—together.
