Is life really not a race?

GRADUATING with Latin Honors in the halls of PICC is the ultimate dream of many students—including mine. Overwhelming as it seems, this goal motivates us to strive harder, especially for the Seniors who are only one step away from this dream. But does our hard work end once we graduate?

The thought of graduating once excites me because after studying for almost all our lives, we will finally stand on stage to get our desired degree. However, as a senior nearing this milestone, I find the horizon uncertain and unclear.

When I was taking a Finance subject, our professor always asked us, “What are your plans after graduation?” or “Where do you see yourself working five years from now?” It may be an easy question for some, but it always makes me ponder for a long time. And this would bring me back to square one—what do I want?

This question led me to so many uncertainties, doubts, and, most especially, realizations. Being uncertain about our future is inevitable. It is a phase almost everyone goes through because life does not go according to our plans. Even with our best efforts to map out each decision, many circumstances can change our direction in the most unexpected ways possible. It would make us anxious and upset, but it can also be a redirection for better opportunities and growth.

I once imagined myself having a stable career after graduating and earning the salary I deserve. Yes, it sounds so comforting to hear such clear goals in life, but as I get closer to graduating, I realize the future I wished for is more ambiguous than I once believed. It is not because I am unsure of what I want or the program I took but because of how complicated and unpredictable the real world is.

Feeling uncertain is normal—whether you are a student, an employee, or someone in any stage of life. Being anxious about what lies ahead is normal, especially if we will be facing significant changes or overcoming challenges.

However, we must also remember that life is not an easy path. There will be many hurdles we must overcome, realizations to make, lessons to learn, and opportunities to seize. Our journey in life can be complicated and full of unforeseen twists and turns, but it will all be worthwhile.

The real world scares you? Face it. Scared to navigate things? Do it. Yes, you are supposed to do it anyway, so just do it scared. Being determined to step up despite your anxieties is what it means to deal with your fears. Instead of being afraid, having the right mindset will enable us to be more curious about what the world has to offer.

Remember, life is not a race but a journey we must all enjoy and cherish. Do things at your own pace because only your actions today can define the future you desire.
