CHRISTMAS is a time that commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ. As stated in John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believed in him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” This verse represents how God chose to be present among humanity — not through wealth or power but through humility and love.
Today, however, Christmas feels different. What was once a simple and meaningful celebration has slowly become more demanding, and people are expecting more materially. Although decorations go up early, sales start to show everywhere, and people start preparing as early as September, many focus more on buying, planning, and completing lists rather than reflecting on what Christmas truly means. The season becomes busy and noisy, even though it is meant to be calm and meaningful. Instead of being content just being together, many began to focus on budgeting and financial concerns.
This does not mean that giving gifts is wrong. Gifts are a way to show love and appreciation. But when gifts become the main focus of Christmas, the season begins to feel rushed. Instead of enjoying time with others, people — including myself begin to worry about what still needs to be bought or prepared. Christmas becomes something to finish rather than something to experience.
The focus on presents furthermore affects how people feel during the holidays. Not everyone has the same ability to give, and because of this, many feel that simple gifts feel small, even when they are given with sincere effort. Hence, Christmas was never meant to make anyone feel left out or less important. Even when they feel small and simple, what truly matters is being together with people you love.
What gives Christmas its true meaning is presence. Being present means giving time and attention to others. It means sitting together, sharing meals and talking without distractions, and simply being there. These moments do not cost anything, but they are often the ones remembered most. Long after gifts are forgotten, shared time remains.
At its heart, Christmas is about love, humility, and connection. It reminds people to slow down and focus on what truly matters. Choosing presence over presents brings Christmas back to its true purpose. Christmas should not be measured by how much is given but how much love and time are shared.
Merry Christmas from my family to yours.
