SAN Beda College Alabang (SBCA) marks its 50-year milestone with the unveiling of ‘The Red and Gold of San Beda College Alabang’ coffee table book during the ‘Images of Faith’ exhibit last Jan. 18. The contents of the book, meticulously archived and written by SBCA’s museum curator and archivist, Dr. Joseph C. Renta III, serve as a visual chronicle that opens a window into the college's journey. From its humble beginnings to becoming a symbol of academic excellence, the book encapsulates the enduring spirit and resilience of SBCA. More than a tribute, it's a straightforward exploration of how the institution evolved into the place we recognize today.
Insights Behind the Symbolism
During Renta's exhibition speech, he explained the meaning behind the book’s title and provided insights into its significance. Explaining that "red represents the pains, and the gold symbolizes the glories; there would never be any glory if it weren't for the pains. " For those beyond the Bedan community, "This book will also be interesting, especially for those who are part of other academic institutions that have not yet documented their history,” he emphasized.
Moreover, Renta disclosed during the speech that the book was initially intended to be launched during the jubilee year but encountered a one-year delay. He remarked, "Not only did we need to perfect it, but additional information had to be included."
THE BEDAN HERALD had the privilege of interviewing Renta. When asked how he decided on key moments or traditions to include, he explained, "The book not only covers the institution's celebrations but also what led to these events. It goes through various journeys, experiences, and narratives, not solely focusing on the academic aspect but also capturing the celebrations of faith."
Regarding the impressions the book leaves about SBCA's legacy, he shared, "For non-Bedans, I hope it will convey the impact that faith holds tremendous importance. Faith played a crucial role, enabling the institution to begin from its humble origins to the prominent establishment we know today."
Legacy Through a Lens
Now available on the shelves at the St. Maur Bookstore, ‘The Red and Gold of San Beda College Alabang’ coffee table book is more than a display piece; it's a celebration spanning 50 years of SBCA's history. This book offers students, alumni, and faculty members to revisit the shared experiences, celebrations, and challenges that define our Bedan community.
